FAQ

Q
What health testing do you do?
A

All of our Whippets have current OFA NORMAL advanced cardiac screens and OFA NORMAL CERF eye exams, and OFA Normal BAER exams. We do our best to ensure we are breeding only healthy and sound dogs.

Q
What health tests are performed on puppies before they go home?
A

All of our puppies have BAER hearing assessments by a neurologist, CAER eye exams by an opthamologist, and cardiac auscultations by a cardiologist — all specialists are board certified in their fields and results of their exams are provided to families.

Q
When can I come for a visit?
A

When you come to pick up your puppy.  At that time we will be delighted to introduce you to any of our dogs including the Dam (Mother) and Sire (Dad)(if on site).  We do not do visits while we have puppies that have not been vaccinated.

Q
Do you remove dew claws?
A

This is largely dependent on whether puppies in the litter will be going to Europe, however as a general rule of thumb we do remove dewclaws.

Q
When do the puppies leave for their new home?
A

Our puppies stay here until they are at least 11 weeks old.  They will have their first  set of vaccinations from our veterinarian as well as all relevant breed health testing. They will be microchipped and registered with the Canadian Kennel Club.

Q
Where do your dogs live?
A

Our dogs are our house pets, they live with us in our home. Our puppies are born in our bedroom, where they spend the first four weeks of their life. Our dogs do not live in a kennel building but they are kennel trained and sleep in their kennels.

Q
What food do you feed?
A

Our puppies are weaned onto and raised on Purina Pro Plan 30/20 Sport Puppy food in both Chicken and Salmon proteins — puppies should be fed this until a minimum of 12 months old. ProPlan is formulated by veterinary nutritionists and certified to be properly balanced and a complete diet for growing puppies.

We feed most of our adults Inukshuk food made in Canada by Corey Foods. Inukshuk is a marine based formula that the dogs do very well on, and is high in heart healthy vitamins and minerals. Inukshuk food is available from Chewy, Amazon, and specialty retailers Canada wide.

There is no “one-size-fits-all” food… all Comar families receive lifelong nutrition advice at any time needed.

Q
What vaccines do Comar puppies come with?
A

Our puppies are dewormed with Strongid at 2,4,6 and 8 weeks. They receive their first of three DHPP at 8 weeks old and then should receive a booster shot every 4 weeks thereafter until three doses have been administered. At the (minimim) age of 16 weeks old they should receive their Rabies vaccine.

Q
We live internationally, will you ship your puppies?
A

Our puppies must be picked up from our home in Haliburton. We do not ship puppies alone. In special circumstances arrangements can be made for us to travel to you to deliver your puppy.

Q
Are you a member of the Canadian Kennel Club?
A

Yes! I am a member in good standing of the Canadian Kennel Club, Comar is a registered kennel prefix with the CKC and I am the President of the newly founded Haliburton Kennel Club.

Q
AT WHAT AGE CAN I SPAY OR NEUTER MY PUPPY?
A

Comar puppies MUST NOT be spayed or neutered prior to 18 months old. Doing so will void our health guarantee. This requirement is in place so that your whippet can achieve maximum development of their bone, joints and musculature.

Q
What do you charge for your puppies?
A

Comar puppies are $4,000.00+HST ($4520.00) and they are sold on non-breeding registrations through the Canadian Kennel Club.
